As Good as It Gets

Panorama GK 5 Book page 40

Champions aren't born with medals; they earn them with practice, grit and heart. Meet some sporting greats whose stories will make you want to jump up and play!

Did you know?

  1. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, 14-year-old Nadia Comăneci scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics. The scoreboard could show only three digits, so it displayed '1.00'!

  2. Hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand won Olympic gold medals for India in 1928, 1932 and 1936. India celebrates his birthday, 29 August, as National Sports Day.

  3. In 2009, Usain Bolt of Jamaica ran 100 metres in just 9.58 seconds. At his fastest during that race, he was moving at more than 44 kilometres per hour!

Try this: Make a champion card

Pick a sports hero you admire, from any sport and any country. On a card, draw them and write their name, sport, country, one big achievement and one habit that helped them succeed, like practising every day. Ask family members about their sports heroes too, make a set of cards and swap them with friends!

Go further: From leg brace to three golds

As a young child in the USA, Wilma Rudolph had polio, an illness that weakened her left leg, and she had to wear a leg brace. With years of treatment and her family's help, she could walk without it by the age of 12. Then she started running! At the 1960 Rome Olympics, she won three gold medals, the first American woman to win three track and field golds at a single Olympics.
