Olympics

Panorama GK 5 Book page 39

The Olympics are full of surprises, from gold medals that are mostly silver to a flame lit by sunshine. Let's race through some Olympic secrets!

Did you know?

  1. An Olympic gold medal is mostly silver! The rules say it must be covered with at least 6 grams of pure gold.

  2. The Olympic flame is lit in Olympia, Greece, using sunlight. A curved mirror, called a parabolic mirror, gathers the Sun's rays onto one hot spot until the torch catches fire.

  3. The Olympic motto was 'Faster, Higher, Stronger'. In 2021, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) added one more word: 'Together'. In Latin it is 'Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter'.

Try this: Hold a family mini-Olympics

Plan three safe events at home or in a park: a standing long jump (measure it in centimetres), a paper-plate throw and a one-leg balance (time it in seconds). Record everyone's scores in a table. Draw gold, silver and bronze medals on paper circles, and give everyone a 'Together' award for cheering!

Go further: Cricket's big comeback

Cricket has been played at the Olympics only once, at the 1900 Paris Games, in a single match between Great Britain and France. After more than 120 years, cricket is set to return at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics! Men's and women's teams will play the short T20 format, with six teams in each event. If you were the selector, which six teams would you pick?
