Did you know?
Narain Karthikeyan became India's first Formula 1 driver when he raced for the Jordan team at the 2005 Australian Grand Prix.
India hosted Formula 1 races, called the Indian Grand Prix, at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, near New Delhi, in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
At a pit stop, a crew of about 20 mechanics works together to change all four tyres of an F1 car. The car often stands still for only two to three seconds!
Try this: Play the flag game
Use sheets of coloured paper as flags: green, yellow, blue, red, and one with a black-and-white checked pattern drawn on it. One person is the race marshal; the others are drivers 'racing' on the spot. Green: go! Yellow: slow down, no overtaking. Blue: let a faster car pass. Red: stop. Chequered: race over! Anyone who reacts wrongly sits out a lap.
Go further: Wings that push down
An aeroplane's wings are shaped to lift it up into the sky. F1 cars use the same idea in reverse! Their wings are shaped so that the rushing air presses the car down onto the track. This push is called downforce. It helps the tyres grip the road, so the car can take corners at high speed without sliding off.
