Do Good, Be Good

Money-wise, Be Wise

Panorama GK 5 Book page 46

Money is more than coins and notes; it's about making smart choices! Discover the story of the ₹ symbol, how money has changed and a simple jar plan for saving.

Did you know?

  1. The ₹ symbol was chosen in 2010. D. Udaya Kumar designed it by mixing the Devanagari letter 'र' (ra) with the English letter R. The two lines at the top remind us of the tricolour.

  2. In India, banknotes are issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), but coins are made by the Government of India in mints at Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Noida.

  3. Turn over an Indian banknote and look for a panel of words. It shows the note's value in more than a dozen Indian languages. Can you spot yours?

Try this: The three-jar plan

Label three jars or boxes: SAVE, SPEND and SHARE. Whenever you get pocket money or gift money, divide it among the jars. For example, put half in SAVE, some in SPEND and a little in SHARE, to help someone in need. Write down what goes in and out in a small notebook. At the end of the month, count your SAVE jar!

Go further: From shells to scan-and-pay

Long ago, people swapped goods directly; this is called barter. Later, people used things like shells and pieces of metal as money, then coins and paper notes. Today, many Indians pay by scanning a QR code using UPI (Unified Payments Interface), launched in 2016. Remember, digital money is real money too! Always check prices, ask an adult before paying online and never share a PIN.
