Do Good, Be Good

Flameless Cooking

Panorama GK 5 Book page 44

You don't need a stove to be a star chef! With clean hands, fresh fruit and a little kitchen science, you can make snacks that look and taste amazing.

Did you know?

  1. Surprise! To a botanist (a plant scientist), a banana is a berry, but a strawberry is not. Strawberries belong to a different group of fruits.

  2. A cucumber is about 95% water, which is why it feels so cool and crunchy. Botanists even count it as a kind of berry!

  3. Cut apples turn brown because a helper chemical in the apple, called an enzyme, works with oxygen in the air. A few drops of lemon juice slow this down.

Try this: Rainbow fruit chaat

Do this with an adult

Make this with an adult in the kitchen. Wash your hands and the fruit. Use fruits you can peel or break by hand: banana, orange segments, grapes and a handful of pomegranate seeds. Arrange them in a bowl in rainbow order. Add a few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of chaat masala, toss gently with a spoon and enjoy!

Go further: The great apple browning test

Scientists use 'fair tests', where they change only one thing at a time. With an adult, set out three apple slices on three plates. Leave one plain, put a few drops of lemon juice on the second, and dip the third in plain water. Check after 30 minutes and again after an hour. Which slice stayed lightest? Write down what you see, like a real scientist!
