Planting to Pear-fection

Panorama GK 2 Book page 51

A juicy pear starts as a tiny seed. Pear trees have some surprising cousins and some very old grandparents. Let's dig in!

Did you know?

  1. Pears, apples, strawberries and roses are cousins! They all belong to the same plant family, called the rose family.

  2. Many pears are picked while still green and hard. They finish ripening at home, in a fruit bowl!

  3. The Endicott pear tree in the USA was planted almost 400 years ago. It is still alive!

Try this: Seed Count Challenge

Do this with an adult

With an adult, cut open a pear, an apple and a guava. Let the adult use the knife. Count the seeds inside each fruit. Which fruit has the most seeds? Which has the fewest? Draw each fruit cut open and show its seeds. Then share a fruity snack!

Go further: Surprise from a Seed

A pear seed is like a surprise gift. A tree grown from a seed may give pears that taste different! So farmers use a trick called grafting. They take a small twig from a tree with tasty pears. They join it onto a young tree, and the two grow together. The new branches then grow the same tasty pears. Will your pear plant's fruit be a surprise?
