Do Good, Be Good
Friends of the Planet
Our planet needs friends! Some people hug trees. Some plant hundreds of them. Some ride bicycles instead of cars. You can help too!
Did you know?
In the Chipko movement, people in the Himalayas hugged trees to save them. 'Chipko' means 'to stick'.
World Bicycle Day is on 3 June. Bicycles need no fuel. They give out no smoke at all!
World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year. It was first held in 1973.
Try this: Make Seed Balls
Do this with an adult
With an adult, mix two handfuls of clay soil with one handful of compost. Add a little water to make a soft dough. Roll small balls, like big marbles. Push two or three seeds into each ball. Dry them in the shade for two days. Before the rains, place them on a bare, safe patch of ground. Watch for sprouts!

Saalumarada Thimmakka lived in Karnataka. With her husband, she planted banyan saplings (baby trees) along a highway. They carried pails of water about 4 kilometres to water them! She cared for 385 banyan trees along that road. 'Saalumarada' means 'row of trees' in Kannada. In 2019, she received the Padma Shri award. What could you plant and look after?
