Panorama GK 2 Book page 34

Put on your thinking cap! People have been solving tricky puzzles for hundreds of years. Even some animals are clever problem-solvers.

Did you know?

  1. One of the oldest puzzle books is over 1,200 years old. Its name means 'Problems to Sharpen the Young'!

  2. A city once had seven bridges. People asked: can you cross each bridge just once? In 1736, Leonhard Euler proved nobody could!

  3. Octopuses are clever escape artists! Some have squeezed out of 'safe' aquarium tanks to look for food.

Try this: The River Puzzle

A farmer must take a fox, a hen and some grain across a river. His boat can carry him and only one thing. If left alone, the fox will eat the hen. The hen will eat the grain. What should the farmer take across first? Act it out with three toys!

Show answer

the hen, because the fox will not eat the grain.

Go further: The Thirsty Crow Test

Do you know the story of the thirsty crow? It drops pebbles into a pot to raise the water. Is it just a story? In 2009, scientists tested it with rooks. Rooks are birds of the crow family. A worm floated on water in a tall tube, too low to reach. The rooks dropped stones in, one by one. Up came the water, and the worm too! Clever birds!
