A World Tour
By the Riverside
Many great cities grew up beside rivers. Rivers gave people water, food and a way to travel. Let's sail past some amazing rivers, islands and bridges!
Did you know?
The Danube river flows through or along 10 countries in Europe. Four capital cities sit on its banks!
The Amazon river carries more water than any other river. Yet no bridge crosses it from side to side!
Majuli is an island in the Brahmaputra river in Assam. In 2016, Guinness World Records named it the world's largest river island!
Try this: Make a Mini River
Do this with an adult
With an adult, fill a baking tray with damp sand or soil. Raise one end with a book. Slowly pour a cup of water at the top end. Watch the water find its way down. Does it go straight or bend? Pour again. Does the path get deeper? This is how real rivers carve the land!
Go further: Rivers of Indian Cities
Indian cities have rivers too! Hyderabad sits on the Musi river. It divides the Old City from the newer part. Delhi lies on the Yamuna. In Kolkata, the famous Howrah Bridge crosses the Hooghly river. It was built without a single nut or bolt! Its steel parts are joined with rivets (metal pins). Which river is closest to your home?
