Continents Unveiled

Panorama GK 2 Book page 13

Seven continents, thousands of wonders! Which one has the most countries? Where do Indian scientists work on the ice? Let's go continent hopping.

Did you know?

  1. Africa has 54 countries. That is more countries than any other continent!

  2. More than half of all the people in the world live in Asia. That includes us in India!

  3. India has two research stations in Antarctica, called Maitri and Bharati. Indian scientists live and work there.

Try this: Label Hunt

Look at labels on things at home: toys, fruits, clothes and packets. Many say 'Made in' or 'Product of' a country. Write down each country you find. Ask an adult to help you find each country on a world map. Which continent is it in? Which continent did most of your things come from?

Go further: When the Continents Were One

Long, long ago, all the land on Earth was joined together. Scientists call this giant land Pangaea. The name means 'all lands'. It began to break apart about 17.5 crore years ago. The pieces slowly drifted away. India moved north and crashed into Asia! This crash pushed up the Himalayas. They still grow about 5 mm taller every year.
