Signboards

Panorama GK 1

Signboards talk to us without saying a word! Their shapes, colours and pictures keep us safe. Let's learn to read them.

Did you know?

  1. A STOP sign is red and has eight sides.

  2. A road sign with a red circle often says 'Do not!' One example is 'No horn'.

  3. A road sign shaped like a triangle warns you. It may say 'school ahead' or 'sharp bend'.

Try this: Sign Spotter

Do this with an adult

Go for a walk with an adult. Look for signboards on the road, in shops and in parks. Count how many you see. Can you guess what each one means just from its picture? Draw your favourite sign at home and colour it.

Go further: Signs Without Words

Many signs have no words at all, only pictures. A running man sign over a door shows the way out. A wheelchair picture shows a place made easy for wheelchair users. Picture signs help people who speak different languages. They also help children who are still learning to read! Can you design a picture sign for your room?
