A World Tour

Around the World

Panorama GK 5 Book page 20

A capital city with no traffic lights, a country named after a tree, and a reef built by tiny animals! Let's take a fresh trip around the world.

Did you know?

  1. Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, has no traffic lights! Instead, police officers stand at busy crossings and guide the traffic with graceful, dance-like hand signals.

  2. Brazil is most likely named after the brazilwood tree, whose wood gives a deep red dye. The name is linked to 'brasa', a Portuguese word for glowing embers.

  3. The ancient Egyptians made a kind of paper from a tall water plant called papyrus. The English word 'paper' comes from 'papyrus'!

Try this: Passport Adventure

Make a paper passport by folding two sheets in half and stapling them along the fold. For each country you 'visit', draw its flag, write its capital and learn how to say 'hello' in its language. 'Stamp' the page with a drawing of something special from that country. Try to visit one new country every week!

Go further: The Great Barrier Reef

Off the coast of Queensland in Australia lies the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system. It stretches for more than 2,300 km and is built by billions of tiny animals called coral polyps. More than 1,500 kinds of fish live there, and six kinds of sea turtles come there to breed. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Warmer seas are a danger to it, so many people are working to protect it.
