Important World Days

Panorama GK 5 Book page 18

Did you know there is a special world day just for play, and a maths day that falls on 3/14? Here are some more days you can celebrate!

Did you know?

  1. The United Nations has named 11 June the International Day of Play. It reminds everyone that play is a right of every child, and that it helps us learn, move and make friends.

  2. World Bee Day, on 20 May, is the birthday of Anton Janša, a beekeeper from Slovenia who was a pioneer of modern beekeeping. Bees help pollinate many of our food crops.

  3. 14 March is the International Day of Mathematics. The date was chosen because it can be written as 3/14, like the first digits of pi (3.14).

Try this: Our Class Calendar of Days

Make a 12-month calendar for your class. For each month, pick one world day and plan a small celebration. On World Bee Day, draw flowers that bees love. On the International Day of Play, invent a new game. On the International Day of Mathematics, run a fun number quiz!

International Mother Language Day is observed on 21 February. UNESCO announced it in 1999 to honour students in Dhaka (now in Bangladesh) who, in 1952, demanded official recognition for their mother tongue, Bangla. In India, where hundreds of languages are spoken, it is a perfect day to learn a word, a rhyme or a song in a language that is new to you.
