Panorama GK 5 Book page 16

A scientist who measured the weather, a mountaineer who never gave up and a man who loved birds: meet more Indians whose work inspires the world!

Did you know?

  1. Anna Mani was a physicist and weather scientist. She helped India make its own weather instruments, and her team standardised the designs of nearly 100 of them!

  2. In 2013, Arunima Sinha became the first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest. She had lost a leg two years earlier, and she climbed with an artificial leg.

  3. Salim Ali, sometimes called the 'Birdman of India', spent his life studying birds. His most popular book, 'The Book of Indian Birds', first came out in 1941.

Try this: Hero Trading Card

Think of someone in your community who helps others: a nurse, a farmer, a teacher or a shopkeeper. Ask them three questions about their work. Make a trading card with their drawing, name, job and their 'superpower', like patience or courage. Give them the card as a thank-you!

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a maths genius from Tamil Nadu who worked out much of his maths on his own. Once, his friend G.H. Hardy said his taxi number, 1729, seemed dull. Ramanujan replied that it was very interesting! It is the smallest number that can be written as the sum of two cubes in two different ways: 1³ + 12³ and 9³ + 10³. India celebrates National Mathematics Day on his birthday, 22 December.
