Do Good, Be Good
Let's Fly!
An airport trip is like a giant board game, full of codes, numbers and rules! Discover the secrets that help millions of travellers fly safely and kindly.
Did you know?
Every airport has a three-letter code. Some come from old city names: Mumbai is BOM (from Bombay), Chennai is MAA (from Madras) and Kolkata is CCU (from Calcutta). Look for the code on a luggage tag!
Before take-off, the crew explains: put on your own oxygen mask first, then help others. High up, the air has less oxygen, and you may have only seconds before you feel unwell. You help others best when you are safe!
Runway numbers are compass directions! A runway marked 09 points east (90 degrees), and one marked 27 points west (270 degrees). The two ends of the same runway always have numbers that differ by 18.
Try this: Kind Traveller Checklist
Before your next trip by plane, train or bus, make a 'Kind Traveller' checklist with your family: wait your turn in queues, keep your voice low, keep your seat area tidy, thank the staff and offer help to older passengers. Then crack these airport codes: DEL, BLR and HYD. Which cities are they?

Go further: The Traffic Police of the Sky
Air traffic controllers are like traffic police for aeroplanes. From a tall control tower, they watch the runways and the sky and talk to pilots by radio. They tell each plane when to take off, land or wait, so that planes always stay a safe distance apart. Pilots must follow their instructions. At a busy airport, teamwork and following rules keep everyone safe!
