Around the World
Lakes too many to count, hundreds of languages, stone pillars older than the pyramids and a world first for women: let's discover more surprises about our world!
Did you know?
Canada has more lakes than any other country. Scientists estimate it has somewhere between about 8.8 lakh and 20 lakh lakes, so nobody has managed to count them all!
More than 700 languages are spoken across Indonesia. Imagine your classmates speaking hundreds of different languages! Bahasa Indonesia, the national language, helps people from different islands understand each other.
Göbekli Tepe in Türkiye has giant stone pillars carved with foxes, boars, snakes and vultures. People built it about 11,500 years ago, more than 6,000 years before Egypt's Great Pyramid!
Try this: Write a Country Riddle
Pick a country you would love to visit. Find three surprising facts about it in an atlas or encyclopedia. Now write a four-line riddle that hints at the country without naming it. Make lines 1 and 2 rhyme, and lines 3 and 4 rhyme. Read it aloud to your family. How many lines did they need to guess it?
Go further: The First Country Where All Women Could Vote
In 1893, New Zealand became the first country in the world where all women had the right to vote in national elections. A campaign led by Kate Sheppard gathered nearly 32,000 signatures on a petition to Parliament. Women in New Zealand voted for the first time on 28 November 1893. Today, women vote in most countries, but it took many years of effort. Ask an elder in your family about the first time they voted!
