Did you know?
World Sparrow Day is celebrated on 20 March. It was started by the Nature Forever Society of India, along with other groups, and was first observed in 2010.
The common tailorbird, often seen in Indian gardens, really sews! It pokes tiny holes along the edges of a big leaf and stitches them together with plant fibre or spider silk to hold its nest.
Hummingbirds live only in the Americas, so you won't see one in India. Look for sunbirds instead! They sip nectar too, but usually perch on a flower instead of hovering.
Try this: Build a Bird Bath
Do this with an adult
Birds need water as much as food, especially in summer. With an adult, place a wide, shallow clay dish in a shady, safe spot on the floor of a balcony, terrace or garden, never on a ledge. Put a flat stone in the middle for small birds to stand on. Change the water every day so it stays clean and mosquitoes cannot breed.
Go further: Become a Bird Counter
Scientists cannot watch every bird on Earth, so they ask ordinary people to help! In the Great Backyard Bird Count, held over four days every February, people count the birds they see and share their lists. It started in 1998, and the counts help scientists learn where birds live and how their numbers change. Start your own bird diary: write the date, the bird and what it was doing.
