Do Good, Be Good
Pollution or Solution?
Pollution is not only smoke and rubbish. Too much light can be pollution too! The good news is that small daily choices make a big difference.
Did you know?
Bright city lights can hide the stars. In 2016, scientists estimated that about one-third of all people on Earth could no longer see the Milky Way from where they live.
Baby sea turtles hatch on beaches at night and find the sea by moving away from the dark dunes. Bright lights near beaches can confuse them and lead them the wrong way.
India's National Air Quality Index (AQI) was launched in 2014. It turns air pollution into one simple number. The lower the number, the cleaner the air!
Try this: Lights-Out Star Count
Do this with an adult
On a clear night, go to a balcony, terrace or open ground with an adult. Count the stars you can see in one small patch of sky. Then switch off the lights around you for 10 minutes and count again. Did more stars appear? Try it on three different nights and write down your results.
Go further: Worms to the Rescue
Kitchen peels don't have to become rubbish. In vermicomposting, worms such as red wigglers eat fruit and vegetable peels, tea leaves and eggshells. What comes out of the worms, called worm castings, is rich food for plants! Meat and dairy are kept out because they rot and attract pests. Ask your school or housing society if they could start a worm bin.
