Sports and Trophies

Panorama GK 3 Book page 39

Some trophies have wilder stories than the matches! One was found by a dog, and another has a golden pineapple on it.

Did you know?

  1. In 1966, the World Cup trophy was stolen in London. A week later, a collie dog named Pickles sniffed it out, wrapped in newspaper, under a garden hedge!

  2. The men's singles trophy at Wimbledon has a small golden pineapple on it. Champions take home a smaller copy (a replica), not the real trophy.

  3. The Durand Cup, first played near Shimla in 1888, is Asia's oldest club football tournament still being played. Its winners get not one but three trophies!

Try this: Make a Family Trophy

Find a clean, empty plastic bottle and a bottle cap. Wrap the bottle in aluminium foil or coloured paper, and stick the cap on top with glue. Decorate it with stickers. Now invent a funny family award, like 'Best Plant Waterer' or 'Tidy Room Champion', and present it at dinner with a short speech!

Go further: A Cup for School Teams

Did you know there is a big football tournament just for school teams? The Subroto Cup began in 1960 and is played in New Delhi. It is named after Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, a chief of the Indian Air Force, who came up with the idea. The Air Force still runs it, and school teams from India and other countries take part. Maybe your school team will play in it one day!
