Logical Reasoning

Panorama GK 3 Book page 31

Logical reasoning means using clues, step by step, to reach an answer you can be sure of. Detectives, doctors and scientists use it every day!

Did you know?

  1. The word 'logic' comes from the old Greek word 'logos', which can mean 'word', 'speech' or 'reason'.

  2. The famous artist Leonardo da Vinci wrote many notes in his notebooks in mirror writing. It runs from right to left, so it is easiest to read when you hold it up to a mirror!

  3. On many ambulances, the word AMBULANCE is painted back to front. Why? Drivers in front see it in their rear-view mirror, where it flips and reads the right way!

Try this: The Ice Cream Queue

Five friends wait in a queue for ice cream. Divya is first. Eshan is last. Bilal stands right behind Asha. Chetan is not next to Divya. Who is third in the queue? Draw five boxes and use the clues one by one. Then make a queue puzzle for a friend!

Show answer

Bilal. The order is Divya, Asha, Bilal, Chetan, Eshan.

Go further: Mirror Letters

Hold a mirror beside these capital letters: A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y. They look the same in the mirror because their left and right halves match. This is called symmetry. A word made only of these letters that is also spelt the same backwards, like MOM, WOW or TOOT, looks the same in a mirror too! Write one on paper and check. Can you find a longer one?
