Vital Organs
Your organs work non-stop, even while you sleep. Which organ is the biggest? Which one can grow back? Let's find out!
Did you know?
Your skin is your body's largest organ! An adult's skin, spread out flat, would cover about 1.5 to 2 square metres, roughly the size of a single bed.
The liver is the only organ inside the body that can grow back. Even if a large part of it is removed, the small piece left behind can grow back to nearly full size!
Your two lungs are not twins! The right lung has three sections (lobes), but the left lung has only two. The left lung is a little smaller and has a dip where your heart fits.
Try this: Count Your Heartbeats
Place two fingers (not your thumb) on the inside of your wrist, just below your thumb. Feel a gentle thump? That is your pulse. Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4 to get your beats per minute. Now do 20 jumping jacks and count again. Why do you think your heart beat faster?
Go further: Your Busy Heart
Make a fist. Your heart is about the size of a closed fist, and it is a strong muscle that never takes a break. A grown-up's heart at rest beats about 72 times a minute. That adds up to about 1 lakh beats every day, even while you sleep! Each beat pushes blood all around your body. How many times does a heart beating 72 times a minute beat in one hour?
