Fascinating Nature

Fin-tastic Species

Panorama GK 2 Book page 7

Some fish hide among stinging arms. Some whales chirp. One fish even draws in the sand! Dive in and meet some fin-tastic sea creatures.

Did you know?

  1. A clownfish lives among a sea anemone's stinging arms. A slimy coat on its body keeps it from getting stung!

  2. Beluga whales are called 'sea canaries' because they squeak, whistle and chirp. Their babies are born grey and turn white later.

  3. In Japan, a small male pufferfish makes a huge circle pattern in the sand. It is about 2 metres wide!

Try this: Fish or Not?

Not everything in the sea is a fish! A fish lives in water, breathes with gills and usually has fins. Sort these six animals into 'fish' and 'not fish'. Shark, seahorse, sea star, whale, clownfish, jellyfish. Then check your answers.

Show answer

Fish: shark, seahorse, clownfish. Not fish: sea star, whale, jellyfish.

Go further: Coral Reefs of India

Coral reefs are like busy underwater cities full of fish. India has coral reefs too! You can find them around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. There are more in the Gulf of Mannar and the Gulf of Kutch. The Lakshadweep islands are atolls (ring-shaped coral islands). There are 36 islands, but people live on only 10 of them.
