Lava Lamp

Panorama GK 2 Book page 53

Some liquids float and some sink. That is the secret behind your lava lamp! Let's explore more floating and sinking surprises.

Did you know?

  1. The first lava lamp was made in England in 1963. Inside, a bulb warms blobs of wax, so they rise, cool and sink.

  2. Real lava from a volcano is usually 800 to 1,200 °C. That is many times hotter than boiling water!

  3. Only about one-tenth of an iceberg shows above the water. The rest hides below the surface!

Try this: Rainbow Layers Jar

Do this with an adult

With an adult, pour 3 spoons of oil into a clear glass. Mix a drop of food colouring into 3 spoons of water. Gently pour it in. Then slowly add 3 spoons of honey. Watch where each liquid goes! Which one ends up at the bottom? Which one floats on top? Do not drink it.

Go further: The Sea Where You Float

The Dead Sea is a very salty lake in West Asia. Its water is almost ten times saltier than the ocean! All that salt makes the water heavy. So people float on top very easily, like a cork. But fish cannot live there, because it is far too salty. Remember the salt in your lava lamp? Salt changes how things float and sink!
