Plant Facts
Plants cannot walk or talk, but they have amazing tricks. Some bloom once in many years, and some even catch insects! Let's dig in.
Did you know?
Neelakurinji shrubs in the Western Ghats bloom only once in 12 years. Then whole hillsides turn purple-blue!
In 2005, scientists planted a date palm seed that was about 2,000 years old. It sprouted and grew!
Wolffia plants are the smallest flowering plants on Earth. They float on ponds like tiny green specks!
Try this: Follow the Light
Soak a few moong seeds in water overnight. Plant them in a small cup of soil. Water them a little each day. When the sprouts are two fingers tall, put the cup by a bright window. Check them the next day. Which way are they bending? Now turn the cup around. What happens after another day?
Go further: The Pitcher Plant of Meghalaya
Some plants catch insects! The pitcher plant of Meghalaya grows leaves shaped like little jugs with lids. Insects land on the slippery rim and slide inside. They cannot climb out, and the plant slowly turns them into food. It is the only pitcher plant that grows wild in India. In the Jaintia Hills, its name roughly means 'lidded fly net'!
