Panorama GK 2 Book page 30

Numbers are everywhere, from clocks to cricket scores. Long ago, people wrote numbers in very different ways. Let's play with numbers old and new!

Did you know?

  1. A googol is 1 followed by 100 zeros! A nine-year-old boy named Milton thought up this funny name in 1920.

  2. In ancient Egypt, a picture of a tadpole meant 1,00,000 (one lakh). A lotus flower meant 1,000!

  3. Many clocks with Roman numerals show four o'clock as IIII, not IV. Look out for one!

Try this: Guess My Number

Read the clues and find my number. I am between 10 and 20. I am an even number. My two digits add up to 5. Who am I? Now make up your own 'Guess My Number' riddle. Give your family three clues!

Go further: Count Like a Roman

The Romans wrote numbers using letters. I means 1, V means 5 and X means 10. Put letters side by side to add them. So VI is 5 + 1 = 6, and XI is 11. If a smaller letter comes before a bigger one, take it away. So IV is 4 and IX is 9. The Romans had no sign for zero! Can you write your age in Roman numerals?
