Global Greetings

Panorama GK 2 Book page 18

Some greetings mean much more than 'hello'. One means love, and one wishes you good health. Another means hello, thank you and goodbye!

Did you know?

  1. In Hawaii, 'aloha' means love. People use it to say both hello and goodbye!

  2. In New Zealand, people say 'kia ora'. It means 'be healthy' in the Māori language. It can also mean thank you.

  3. In Ladakh, one magic word, 'julley', means hello, thank you and goodbye!

Try this: Hello Around India

Learn to say hello in four Indian languages. Vanakkam is Tamil. Namaskaram is Telugu. Sat Sri Akal is Punjabi. Nomoshkar is Bengali. Greet each family member in a different language today! Then ask your friends how they say hello in their home language. Make a 'Hello Chart' with all the words you collect.

Go further: Ahoy or Hello?

When telephones were new, people did not know what to say first! Alexander Graham Bell, who helped invent the telephone, liked 'Ahoy!'. Sailors use this word to call out to ships. The inventor Thomas Edison suggested 'Hello!' instead. In 1877, he wrote that it could be heard from several metres away. 'Hello' won, and we still say it today. What would you say?
