Kitchen Utensils

Panorama GK 1

Tawa, kadai, chakla and belan! The kitchen is full of useful tools. Let's find out how some kitchen utensils work.

Did you know?

  1. A pressure cooker traps steam inside. This makes it extra hot, so dal cooks faster!

  2. A clay pot, or matka, keeps water cool. Water slowly seeps out and dries, taking heat away.

  3. A sieve, or chhalni, has tiny holes. Fine flour falls through, and bigger bits stay on top.

Try this: Kitchen Detective

Do this with an adult

With an adult, look around your kitchen. Find tools for stirring, flipping, straining and storing. Say their names. Do not touch anything sharp or hot! Then draw your four tools. Write what each one does.

Go further: Cooking with Sunshine

A solar cooker cooks food using only sunlight! It has shiny panels that bounce sunlight onto a dark pot. Dark colours soak up heat. Slowly, the food inside gets hot enough to cook. No gas, no wood, no smoke! A solar cooker gets very hot, so only grown-ups should handle it. Never stare at its shiny panels in the sun.
