Cotton-Ball Painting

Panorama GK 1

Dab, dab, dab! A cotton ball can be a paintbrush. Let's make soft, fluffy pictures and find out where cotton comes from.

Did you know?

  1. Cotton grows on a plant! The fluffy white fibres grow inside a pod called a boll.

  2. People of the Indus Valley made cotton cloth long, long ago.

  3. Cotton feels soft because it is made of many tiny, thin fibres.

Try this: Cotton Ball Sheep

Clip a cotton ball with a clothes peg. Dip it in white or light-coloured paint. Dab it on paper to make a fluffy sheep body. Add a black face and legs with a crayon. Try making clouds or a snowman too! Wash your hands when you finish.

Go further: Pictures Made of Dots

Long ago, a French artist named Georges Seurat painted with tiny dots. Up close, you just see dots. Step back, and the dots become a park with people and trees! This way of painting is called pointillism. Your cotton-ball dabs work in the same way. Try a dotty rainbow!
